5 out of 5 stars mOTHER iNDIA (1957)   March 12, 2010
Panayiotis Orphanides (Nicosia Cyprus)
The All Time Indian Classic. I think everybody must see this film. I do not think any other film gives the raw reality of the rich exploiting the poor.

5 out of 5 stars The MOTHER of all INDIAn Films   September 9, 2009

Starring Nargis Dutt in her most important role, Mother India is a tale of loyalty, greed and honesty where a mother's struggle to hold her family together in hard times, tests her patience and resolve. Ultimately she sticks to her ideology of leading by example and passes these teaching onto her children as a basis for root development.

Sunil Dutt sizzles in the roles of Bhiju, the maverick spawn of Nargis whose character will go down as the greatest anti-hero in Bollywood history. Raaj Kumar gives a good cameo as the father and Naushad's melodious soundtrack is also pleasing.

Never has a film addressed social concerns in India with such passion and on such a scale. It tackles the balance of power in the country and exposes the hypocrisies in key leading figures, making it an evergreen and relevant piece of cinema. All other Bollywood social dramas will be compared to this film.

Mother India is an emotional, tear jerking drama on the same scale as Gone with the Wind and one which Bollywood audiences can instantly relate to at a personal level. This set the formula for all future films in this popular category and thus making Mother India the epitome of Indian cinema. It is also a ground-breaking film. The mother figure is a mandatory element in Bollywood films and this is largely down to this film. The role of women in society, and in the family environment are also important elements.

So, is Mother India the greatest Bollywood film of all time? Its main contenders are Sholay and possibly Mughal - E - Azam. It has more substance than Sholay even though not as iconic. Mughal - E - Azam is more pleasing on the eye, but as far as dramas are concerned its difficult to pinpoint any other Bollywood film that has recreated the gritty intensity of this film.

Nargis Dutt symbolises a whole industry. She symbolises the poor in India and people in general. It's the people's film - people who drive this massive film industry.

This movie is a classical Indian movie. The most important part of the film is the songs in it. Without understanding the songs on cannot understand the philosophy behind the film. Well guess what Eros forgot to subtitle the songs.

Mehboob Khan was excellent in producing movies that reflected the polical and social issues of the time. The story is great. I throughly enjoyed it. I am certain what is shown in Mother India, still exist in parts of India. It has a great conscientious stimulating theme. Nargisji played her role exceptionally well. It is in my top 5 best Indian movies

5 out of 5 stars an indian GONE WITH THE WIND   September 30, 2008

This was conceived as an an indian gone with the wind in spirit,it was made as a stylish epic on the woes and sufferrings of indian womanhood and thus reflects the importance of the woman as a matriarch in a culture defined by the matron.

It'S immense popularity also bears witness to the genius of Mehboob who is able to invent a character and cast it perfectly with Nargis to create a folk tale and also great music and cinematography from the rural locales, the peasants and their traditions are shown immaculately with stark realism -also the attitudes of the villagers are truly shown in the ambiance of an indian rural setting in a true reflection of the real indian farmer and his ordinary life.

But it is the trivia and the realism which make this movie great as every set detail and costumes smack of reality as does the floods and the rains and the harvesting scenes ,its a chunk from the heart of an indian peasant and its simple and pure just like its origonal protagonist.

It's appeal is eternal and is more popular today then when it was made like Sound of music and My fair lady, cliched but great story telling and as for the songs, indians cannot do anthing from birth to death witout music and dancing.

From the western eye view it is totally removed from Pathar panchali or Boot polish as much as Sound of music is from Citizen kane or Gone with the wind -this is popular art which is both melodramatic and like a great soap opera but it still is great art ,
