Authoritive and covers many unusual aspects August 25, 2010 Nelle Tap (Gt Kingshill, Bucks United Kingdom) The book is full of concise clear and authoritative advice. What I especially like is some of the aspects which could be counted as peripheral but which add so much knowledge and inform decisions. For example, a chunk about the heat required in the hive and how it is maintained and the implications of different variations from the ideal. A smaller section on the sound of the buzz and how it relates to the speed of the wings sounds comparatively unimportant but when you are out trying to identify flitting insects it can add that little something to help the identification. This wasn't the first book I read so you would imagine that some sections were less fresh and consequently of less interest. This is not the case; I have been entranced by what I have read so far (two thirds of the way through). My family might just say it is because I am obsessed. They may have a point!
excellent beekeeping reference book August 2, 2010 Ms. Karen J. Mccartney (Manchester, England) Having read most of the books on beekeeping, I am aware of the basics, but wanted something that went into more depth. This book is just the thing, and I am sure I will refer to it throughout my future years of keeping bees. A big thumbs up. Great pictures, and an updated section on diseases. Brilliant.
The beekeepers bible August 2, 2010 Mr. D. J. Marsh (UK) Having taken up beekeeping a couple of years okay I have several books in my bee library but the late Ted Hoopers book is considered by many to be one of the best. Its seems a little heavy going when you first start out and I would recommend a book like 'Bees at the bottom of my garden' but as your knowledge and experience grow this is the book that you will refer back to time and time again.
My only critiscm is that the book has not been updated and all measurements are in 'old money' so I have to convert everything but that is a minor gripe for such a great compilation of really useful information.
A really great book, well thumbed, well used, well recommended!
Guide to Bees and Honey May 2, 2010 Mrs. Patricia Neill (Northern Ireland UK) I bought this as a present for a couple who were new to keeping bees. They attended classes on the subject and this book was the one to which the tutor referred. It is as well respected publication. A must for new beekeepers.
