5 out of 5 stars Sheep Farming in Barnet/the Blue Meaning   March 16, 2010

Sheep Farming in Barnet/the Blue Meaning
I bought this double album as a bit of a nostalga trip, not really expecting to like it overly much. Boy was I wrong. I was a big Toyah fan in teh 80's but somehow lost touch with the music over the past 20 odd years. I thought this would sound dated and a bit embarrasing. How wrong was I? Sheep farming to start is a fantastic, raw energy filled masterpiece that stirs the emotions and certainly takes me back to those long gone days in teh 80's. Raw it may be, but very powerful and the songs are amazing.

The Ble Meaning is efvery bit as good, if not better. More polished but still unique and full of energy. I listen to a lot of music. I have over 500 albums in my collection, some I love, ome I like. These 2 albums I definetely love. I recommend them to anyone who has even teh slightest inkling that they may want to hear Toyah. I almost didn't buy them, but so glad I did

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance!!   February 25, 2010

The Toyah band at their best! I had these albums in the early 80's,and to hear them again is amazing! Delving into these again feels like walking in a dark, mystical landscape of heartfelt lyrics;"Bird In Flight";poetic inspiration,"Tiger,Tiger",and sheer indie uniqueness;"Mummies","Spaced Walking","Blue Meanings","Insects".The list could go on and on!

An artist and a band at the peak of their careers!!

5 out of 5 stars A Question   February 26, 2008

Are these original recordings and not the awful re-recorded efforts that can be found on iTunes?

4 out of 5 stars This really -IS- the best of Toyah   April 9, 2005

Thank you, thank you to whoever had the mad idea of re-releasing these albums on CD. Putting both on one CD makes them simply unmissable. Just to be clear - this CD contains the full albums SHEEP FARMING IN BARNET and THE BLUE MEANING.

You know how it is, don't you? - somehow your original vinyl copies of albums you never wanted to lose vanish into thin air and you spend the rest of your life nursing an increasingly threadbare cassette tape that you made so you could play them in the car. And every so often, you riffle through the racks in the more obscure corners of your local record shop and you find a 'best of' CD - but it never IS a best of. All it ever is is a selection of the tracks which were commercial and banal (and safe) enough to make it into the charts, whereas most of Toyah's real stuff was much too dark and strange to be played on the radio or on TOTP.

Buy this for "IEYA", "MUMMIES", "THE LAST GOODBYE", "NEON WOMB", "DANCED" (which is a very slow starter, but stick with it), and THE BLUE MEANING to name just a few.

While you're at it, you should probably buy THE CHANGELING just for "THE PACKT" and ANTHEM just for "THE MARIONETTE", although these albums are slightly less good overall than Blue Meaning and Sheep Farming.

... or should I say "they".

One of the things that caused the Toyah band to have such a changeing lineup was that she expected their albums to be a group effort but they felt that she got all the limelight and the recognition.

The Blue Meaning is the (first) Toyah band at their best. Powerful, haunting (as in the classic "Ieya") to the sheer vibrant energy of "Ghosts" and "Mummies" to the darker "Blue Meaning" - and the even darker "Insects" and "Visions" are both unique in Toyah's discography for their prophetic insight and as well as for their sheer darkness. "Insects" still sends shivers down my spine even now after 20 years.

This is Toyah at her (their?) most creative before the manufactured pop (or should that be pap?) took over and the law of diminishing returns degraded the quality, her last albums being little more than a joke. Enjoy this while she's at her least commercial and at her most creative. Essential listening for me at least. Very much of it's time, you can't imagine something like this being released today. Kids today don't know what they're missing, but with the likes of Pop Idol setting the standard these days what can you do?

Sheep Farming is less good, theres some excellent stuff but it's let down by poor production values. Enjoy especially for "Danced" "Neon Womb" and the wonderful "Bird in Flight" (if it ever gets released listen to the live version it's so much better). 5 stars for Blue Meaning, 3 for Sheep Farming. So 4 overall.
